I've asked this same question every time I read a Macfarlane book. It brings to mind Kathleen Jamie's description of the "lone, enraptured male."

If you have not already, do not read the Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen, where "who's watching the kids?" is a much more fraught question.
I think it read it in grad school but was not in a place to notice that question then!
